Calculating Your Project
How much crushed stone or recycled crushed concrete do you need? Here's how to figure it out — and a quick calculator to do the math for you.
Enter the dimensions of your area and the depth you want. We'll estimate the cubic yards needed (with a 10% allowance for spillage and depth inconsistencies).

Crushed stone is a good choice for meandering pathways, sitting areas, or separating areas on your lawn — and recycled crushed concrete is an excellent alternative while helping reduce trash and overflowing landfills. Calculating the amount you need takes a few simple steps.
Outline the area
Spray lawn-marking paint to outline the garden path or sitting area where you'll install your crushed stone.
Measure the surface area (in feet)
For squares and rectangles, multiply length × width. For a circle, square the diameter, divide by 4, then multiply by 3.14 to get the area in square feet.
Multiply by your depth (in feet)
Convert inches to feet by dividing by 12. Example: a walkway 40 ft × 2 ft = 80 sq ft. At 4 in deep (4 ÷ 12 = 0.33 ft): 80 × 0.33 = 26.4 cubic feet.
Convert to cubic yards
Divide cubic feet by 27. Example: 26.4 ÷ 27 = 0.98 cubic yards. Add an additional 10% to cover spillage and depth inconsistencies.
Things you will need
- Lawn-marking paint
- Measuring tape
- Calculator
Tips
- Use a square spade to dig straight down and make a clean trench. Mark your shovel with duct tape at the depth you want so you can see it without re-measuring.
- Wet the crushed stone or recycled concrete with a hose after placing it, then tamp firmly to seat the material into the soil.
- Place tarps next to the area when digging so the excavated soil is easy to remove.
You'll get the most value from a full load. LTL (less-than-truckload) deliveries are available, but pricing largely depends on delivery location and material availability.
